What does this privacy notice cover?
This privacy notice provides information about the personal data collected and processed when using the Shell App (“Shell App”) in the context of electric vehicles (EVs).
When providing the Shell App, Shell International Petroleum Company Limited or its affiliates within the Shell group of companies (hereafter referred to as “Shell”, “we” or “us”) may collect, store and process information that is required to deliver our services or for which you have given your consent.
What personal data do we process about you?
For clarity, we have grouped interactions into two categories:
- Users of charge cards
- Users of the Shell App
1. Users of charge cards
The term “users of charge cards” refers to anyone using a charge card or token offered by Shell to access a charging station. These users interact with us when ordering, registering or using the charge card.
Ordering / registration: When you create a customer account in the Shell App, we collect your name, country, email address and telephone number. When you order or register a charge card with us, we collect your charge card ID, address, and payment details, including credit or debit card information (hereafter: registration data). If you register your Shell hybrid card as a payment method, it will automatically be registered as a charge card.
Using a charge card: When you use a charge card at a Shell Recharge-operated charging station, we collect, in addition to the registration data, your charging session data, including charge card ID, start/stop times, electricity usage, serial number and the location of the charging station (hereafter: charging session details). We collect the same personal data if you choose to pay using the Shell App. If you use a Shell-registered charge card at a non-Shell operated charging station, we receive only the charging session details and your card number from the operator. This allows us to identify you and invoice the charging session. If the charge card is provided by a third party who pays for your usage, we will share the charging session details with that third party for billing purposes.
2. Users of the Shell App
When the Shell App is used, Shell may collect and process transaction and location data from Shell App users in real time. This data is processed only with your consent, in order to enable navigation, display charging information, start or stop a charging session, or allow you to report issues with charging stations.
For what purposes do we process your personal data?
In addition to the purposes outlined in the privacy notice referenced above, Shell App users’ personal data may be processed for the following purposes:
- Verifying your identity to register for a charge card
- Ordering, activating and blocking your charge card
- Sending Shell service emails informing you about your charge card and its activation
- Enabling payments through the Shell App for electric vehicle-related services (including charging sessions and EV subscription services)
- Displaying local reference prices for charging points based on your location
- Billing for electric vehicle charging services
- Adding or updating the delivery address for your charge card
- Viewing charging history in the Shell App
- Handling enquiries and providing customer support
- Managing your Shell App account(s) and facilitating access to and use of online services
- Creating aggregated, non-personalised reports, research and analysis derived from personal data
- Sharing your data with third parties where required for service delivery, including our hosting and email providers acting on Shell’s behalf
- Marketing and commercial communications, subject to your consent
Who do we share your personal data with?
In addition to the categories of recipients listed in the above privacy notice, your personal data may be shared with or received from the following parties:
- Participants involved in the provision of Shell App services, such as retailers and/or other approved data processors providing products and/or services to Shell App users
- Third parties offering services related to your account and the Shell App for communication and legal or regulatory purposes
- Authorised authentication service providers for the purpose of completing the authentication process
